Oh Baby

FREE TO ANYONE

Baby.  Must go in two weeks or going to auction.   I finally got a horse!

Sound crazy?  I just paraphrased the Craiglist ad for this old fellow, his name is London.

Seems London’s owner has had a baby, so this 30 year old OTTB was free to ANYONE or headed to auction in two weeks.  TWO WEEKS!  I don’t know where to begin.

Babies don’t just appear in the spare room one day (thank the stars for that!), we get a bit of notice-like NINE MONTHS notice-that one is arriving.  She had NINE MONTHS to rehome this old guy.  Not that it still wouldn’t be traumatic for the poor old gent, but taking her time would likely ensure he got a GOOD home and did not end up “free to anyone”.  Not even a “free to good home”…just anyone.

Personally I feel euthanasia would be kinder than dumping him in this manner.  Kinder than having him picked up by a meat buyer, or having the last few dollars wrung out of him as a dude horse.  Free to anyone with a two week placement window does not do much to ensure he finds that caring horseperson with a big soft spot, and the knowledge to care for, oldies.

I am hoping that before this woman conceived she KNEW that babies take time and money, like entirely too much time and money if you ask me 😉  Or did she intend on keeping the horse, then gave birth, then realized her barn time had been reduced to zero as Junior did not sleep cutely all the time as they do on the soap operas and Junior required diapers and all manner of expensive baby stuff?

Who knows.  But to dump this gorgeous oldster in this fashion and put him severely at risk is inexcusable.

Thankfully there is a happy ending here, he landed softly at Angel Acres, after a concerned person alerted them to the ad.  You can read the full story on their blog here:

Big kudos to  of Angel Acres for stepping in to help this wonderful old man!!!!

Not to mention the fact that there are plenty of teenagers…I know quite a few…who would GLADLY look after your horse for you while you deal with the new baby. Even a horse that’s too old to be ridden much or at all…some kids just want to groom and love on them.

That just makes me sick. Thank goodness for Angel Acres and Jo for helping this poor old gent. I really wonder if people are that heartless, but there is so much evidence it’s hard to ignore. I love my horses and really can’t imagine abandoning them. Right now I’m having difficult time deciding whether I even want to have children. I’m so afraid of sacrificing time from my horses.
I have a 20 year old TB of my own that I can’t imagine giving up. She is my first horse and I’ll keep her forever. I made a commitment to this horse. She’s safely carried me through numerous shows, trail rides and antics. She kept me going through difficult years and has saved my butt on numerous occasions. She deserves her retirement (she’s currently enjoying being queen boss of my small herd with occasional hacks). I owe that to her. I just wish other horse people felt the same.

Very true CHV, and there are horseless kids in 4H who could participate in the horse care part of it with a sweet old man like him 🙂
Same here HJK, but people can be so heartless that it boggles the mind. Senior dogs dumped at shelters, horses like this guy, or the ones who just move and leave the cat. Funny how many can just forget the joy and experiences their horse brought them. I’m glad your old lady has you for an owner!

Yea, people are this heartless. Dumping an oldster, horse dog or cat, is just inexcusable. If your horse is 30 years old and you cannot care for him anymore, work something out where you have control of the horse. To often I see on CL that someone has “given with a no slaughter, return” clause where the horse has disappeared and they are asking people to look for the horse. Don’t ever sell an old horse (unless to a friend, of course!) Not a week goes by in my area, that I do not see an ad for an old horse that can’t really be ridden anymore, with this clause. Once the horse is sold, the seller has no control over what happens to the horse.
